To calculate the average, add the numbers and divide the sum by how many there are: 108 ÷ 6 = 18. In this average calculator, type or paste your numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines, then press Calculate.
How It's Calculated
The average, also called the arithmetic mean, is the sum of the numbers divided by their count. To find the average of n numbers:
average = (x₁ + x₂ + … + xₙ) ÷ n
Under the result you'll see Sum, Count and Median, then the formula worked out with your numbers, for example 108 ÷ 6 = 18. The median is the middle number once the list is sorted. With an even count, it's the average of the two middle ones: 15 and 16 give 15.5.
Results are rounded to 12 significant digits, so 11 ÷ 3 shows as 3.66666666667. Change the list and press Calculate again.
Examples
Grades, percentages and averages of averages all go into the same list. It works as a semester average calculator or an average percentage calculator, too.
| You enter | Average | Also shown |
|---|---|---|
| 85, 90, 78, 92 | 86.25 | Sum 345 · Count 4 · Median 87.5 |
| 82, 91, 76 | 83 | Sum 249 · Count 3 · Median 82 |
| 82%, 91%, 76% | 83 | Sum 249 · Count 3 · Median 82 |
| 80, 90 (two group averages) | 85 | Sum 170 · Count 2 · Median 85 |
| 70, 90, 85, 90, 95 (all five scores) | 86 | Sum 430 · Count 5 · Median 90 |
FAQ
How do I calculate my average?
Add up your numbers and divide by how many there are: 85, 90, 78 and 92 add up to 345, and 345 ÷ 4 = 86.25. Here you just paste the list and press Calculate. Don't use commas as thousands separators: a comma always splits numbers, so 1,200 is read as two numbers, 1 and 200.
How do I find the average of test scores?
Enter the scores and press Calculate: 85, 90, 78 and 92 average 86.25. That works when every test counts the same. If the final exam counts double, you need a weighted average, which this page doesn't calculate.
How do I calculate an average percentage?
Enter the percentages as plain numbers or with the % sign, which gets dropped: 82%, 91% and 76% average 83. A straight average works when the percentages share a base, like three tests out of 100 points each; with different bases, you need a weighted average. Press Use to take the result to the percentage calculator, for example to see what share of a target it is.
Can I average averages?
Only if the groups are the same size. Group averages of 80 (from 70 and 90) and 90 (from 85, 90 and 95) give 85, but all five scores together average 86, so enter the original numbers when you have them. For an average pace over several runs, put the total distance and total time into the pace calculator.
How do I calculate the average total?
Multiply the average by the count: 18 × 6 = 108. After you press Calculate, the total appears as Sum right under the average.
