This time duration calculator subtracts the start time from the end time, adding 24 hours for shifts past midnight: 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 h 30 min, or 8.5 hours. As a work hours calculator, it adds up shifts and subtracts a break.
Add Up Hours and Minutes
To add hours and minutes, give each shift its own row: press + Add interval. Up to 14 rows fit, enough for a week of two shifts a day. Five days of 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM come to 42 h 30 min, or 42.5 hours.
Breaks go into Break as one number for the whole total, not per shift. Five 30-minute lunches are 150 min, and the same week drops to 40 h.
Press Calculate, then Use to send the result on, for example as a duration into Time on the pace calculator.
How It's Calculated
To calculate hours and minutes worked, or any elapsed time, subtract the start from the end. If the end is at or before the start, the interval runs into the next day, so add 24 hours. That's the step people miss by hand: 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is 8 h.
duration = end − start
duration = end − start + 24 h (when end ≤ start)
total = sum of intervals − break
decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60
Decimal hours are rounded to 2 decimal places, half up: 7 h 25 min is 7.42 hours. Type times in 12h or 24h. In 12h, 17:30 becomes 5:30 PM, and the 12h | 24h switch above the intervals changes only how times look. For time between dates, use the date calculator.

| You enter | Result | Decimal hours |
|---|---|---|
| 9:00 AM → 5:30 PM | 8 h 30 min | 8.5 hours |
| 10:00 PM → 6:00 AM, ends next day | 8 h | 8 hours |
| 5 intervals of 9:00 AM → 5:30 PM | 42 h 30 min | 42.5 hours |
FAQ
How do I calculate hours worked in a day?
Enter when your shift starts and ends, and put lunch in Break: 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30-minute break is 8 h. A day with a gap gets a second interval, so 8 AM to 12 PM plus 1 PM to 5:30 PM counts as 8 h 30 min worked.
How do I find the time between two times, like 10 AM to 12 PM?
Subtract the start from the end: 10 AM to 12 PM is 2 hours. Typing just 10 and 12 is enough, with AM or PM picked next to each field.
How do I add hours and minutes together?
In the calculator, enter each block of time as its own interval and the total adds up for you. By hand, add hours to hours and minutes to minutes, then turn every 60 minutes into an hour: five days of 8 h 30 min are 40 h 150 min, which is 42 h 30 min.
How many hours is 8 hours 30 minutes times 5 days?
42 h 30 min, or 42.5 hours, because 8 h 30 min is 8.5 hours and 8.5 × 5 = 42.5. You can enter five intervals of 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, or calculate one day, press Use and finish the sum on the basic calculator: 8.5 × 5.
What is elapsed time and how do I calculate it?
Elapsed time is how much time passes from a start to an end, so it's end − start. 7:45 AM to 3:10 PM is 7 h 25 min (7.42 hours), and you can type the times as 745 and 310.
