This pace calculator finds your running pace by dividing time by distance: 24:48 over 3.1 miles is 8:00 per mile, or 4:58 per kilometer. Enter any two of distance, time and pace, and it works out the third, in miles or kilometers.
Convert Pace Between Miles and Kilometers
One mile is 1.609344 kilometers, so converting pace takes one step. To convert kilometer pace to mile pace, multiply by 1.609344: 5:00 /km is 8:03 /mi. For mile to km pace, divide by the same number: 8:00 /mi is 4:58 /km.
By hand, first write the pace in decimal minutes (add seconds ÷ 60). The Miles/Kilometers switch does this for you: it converts the distance and pace already entered and leaves the time as it is. Your choice is saved for the whole site and used on your next visit.
How It's Calculated
To calculate running pace, divide your time by the distance. Use miles to calculate mile pace, or kilometers for pace per km. Write the time as decimal minutes first: 24:48 is 24.8 minutes.
pace = time ÷ distance
time = pace × distance
speed = 60 ÷ pace (pace in decimal minutes; per mile gives mph, per km gives km/h)
So 24.8 ÷ 3.1 mi = 8, a pace of 8:00 /mi, and 60 ÷ 8 = 7.5 mph.
Pace and time are rounded to the nearest second; half a second rounds up. Speed has one decimal place, distance two. The conversion uses 1 mi = 1.609344 km.

FAQ
How do I calculate my pace for a race?
Use this page as a race pace calculator: enter the race distance and your goal time to get the pace to hold per mile or kilometer. It also works the other way, from a target pace to a finish time: a marathon at 9:00 /mi comes out at 3:55:58. Pick 5K, 10K, Half or Marathon to fill in the distance, then press Calculate.
How do I convert pace to speed in mph or km/h?
Divide 60 by your pace in minutes: 8:00 /mi is 60 ÷ 8 = 7.5 mph, and 5:00 /km is 12.0 km/h. You don't need a separate pace to mph calculator, since speed in mph and km/h is shown with each pace and time result.
How do I calculate my mile time?
Set the distance to 1 mi and enter your time. The pace you get is your mile time, because for one mile, pace × 1 = time.
What is a normal walking pace?
For adults aged 20 to 59, normal walking speed is 1.31–1.43 m/s: about 18:45–20:29 per mile (11:39–12:43 /km), or 2.9–3.2 mph (4.7–5.1 km/h). Speed drops with age; these figures come from a meta-analysis of 41 studies by Bohannon and Andrews (2011). To use this page as a walking pace calculator, enter distance and time just as for a run.
